long time, no write

25 June 2006

It's been a while since we've used the blog; we've been corresponding with you all largely through comments, messages, and emails lately. Tonight we added a first version of a friends system. It's fairly basic at the moment, but we've got a number of features in mind. Presently, if you add someone as your friend their name will be highlighted in various listings to make their submissions easy to spot. Also, if you head over to friends.reddit.com you'll see a reddit comprised of only submissions from your friends.

In other news, we've been very busy lately keeping up with growth. The volume of spam has increased dramatically lately. Thank you to everyone who reports spam links; it's very helpful. We have a couple tricks up our sleeve that we'll deploy soon to help combat this problem. As always, we prefer solutions that affect our well-behaved users as little as possible.

Keep the feedback coming and enjoy the site!

Few things I noted. *no string strip on input -ie: ' foo' != 'foo' *you can add yourself as a friend

Besides that works. Now when do we get to add enemies & freaks?

Enemies list coming soon...

Evildoers beware.

It's odd, but while I can readily think of reddit usernames that I'd classify as "enemies", it's hard to think of usernames I'd classify as friends.

I think adding yourself as a friend is a good idea ... allows you to see the community's links at the same time.

Would it be possible to share links only to friends? So that, such links appear only friends.reddit.com when the friends log in.

This way, we can also avoid sending emails to multiple persons just sharing some links.

I like the idea of an enemies list, although I'd prefer a shareable list of people to ignore. I think that would be a good way for someone to remove spammers/link-jackers/self-promoters and for other people to be able to view the list, decide whether or not the inclusion is warranted, and if so to add it to their list. Bonus points for being able to tag the members of the ignore list with the reason the person is being ignored.

What about being able to add a friend from viewing their profile or from their submitted story title? For example, Let's say BioGeek submits a story on engineering custom enzymes and I think, that's "rad", Ima add that cat to my friends list and can do so by clicking on some kind of "friend" link listed along with the story? Or maybe, after some consideration for all the story's BioGeek has submitted over the course of several months, I check out his/her profile and then decide, this person consistently submits stories that I like oh and "ah" there's a friends link I can just add them directly. I'm lazy, so this kind of thing prevents me from having to remember to go to friends.reddit.com and then manually type in their name.

I should have said "...me from having to remember to go to instead of friends.reddit.com

Yes, you're right, a "make friend" button should be in the user profiles...

You should check out www.klipboardz.com . The whole point of that site is to have a small group of friends that you can post links and storys back and forth between. You can also make posts public so everyone can see them but you don't have to. It's still a work in progress site but it works pretty well so far.
